Domodedovo International Airport

The Domodedovo International is the 49thbest airport in the world and the largest one in Russia. It is located at a distance of over 40 kilometers from Moscow in the Moscow Oblast area. It handled over 30 million passengers in 2013 and has the most passenger and cargo traffic in the country. Over the last three years, this has been ranked as the best airport of the Eastern European region by Skytrax. The airlines Star Alliance and Oneworld are based in this airport.

The Domodedovo Airport was in service from 1964 but was officially opened in 1965 with one runway. In November 1967, a second runway was added parallel to the first one, exactly 18 months later. The airport is mostly sponsored by the East Line Group which has helped develop the airport immensely since they came aboard in 1996. Since 1998, the company has been leased the runways, communication facilities as well as air traffic control. They also helped in expanding the runway from 70,000 sq meters to 135,000 sq meters in 2009.

The airport has one terminal which is divided into two courses and is the country’s first airport to have parallel runways. The airport has its own railway station with trains to Paveletsky Rail Terminal connected by a comfortable aeroexpress train to Moscow as well as commuter trains, shuttles, limousines, rental cars, city buses and taxis. The Paveletsky metro station is 20 minutes from the airport and one can avail of a metro from here to the city as well. The airport has 5000 parking spots and different parking areas for bicycles and motorcycles as well.
